BASSETT HOUSE
Residential Treatment <> Relapse
Prevention
Bassett House, certified by the Ohio
Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS)
and Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH)
is acclaimed statewide as the cornerstone in the intensive residential
treatment of adolescent addiction. Located on forty scenic acres, in
the beautiful, rolling hills of southeastern Ohio the pastoral setting
conveys an immediate feeling of warmth and stability. Bassett House
treats addiction as a disease from which young men and women, 13 to 18
years of age, can recover with the support of strength-based, family
focused therapeutic intervention. A full range of innovative, gender
specific services are available, including day treatment and relapse
prevention, and mental health services. The empirically based Bassett
Model focuses on empowering youth and their families with the skills
and resources necessary to change the known behavioral determinants of
addiction.
The Staff
The Bassett House interdisciplinary treatment team
includes a dietician, full medical staff, licensed psychologists,
professional counselors, state certified teachers, and highly trained
group life staff. Our counseling staff includes ODMH
and ODADAS credentialed clinicians and
rehabilitation counselors, as well as experienced case managers.
Responsiveness to referring agencies is a source of
pride for Bassett House. The client's progress is reviewed with the
referral sources on a consistent basis, both by telephone and by
written progress reports. An on-site, mid-point case review is held
with referral personnel, as well as a re-entry meeting in the home
community, prior to completion of the program. Continuing care after
completion of the residential program is an important component of
discharge planning. Bassett House provides a structured framework,
conducive to experiential learning and didactic teaching, that creates
an empowering, client-centered atmosphere. Youth are involved in the
goal setting process that culminates with an operational treatment
plan, built on the youth's strengths. Bassett House staff and clients
internalize teamwork as the power of a shared vision that prioritizes
concentration on the first step to recovery.
The Bassett program is based on the Bio-psychosocial
Model of addiction therapy that recognizes the need to provide a full
continuum of integrated care from residential treatment to
community-based services. We believe in utilizing twelve step
fellowships to support the treatment process and we STRONGLY encourage
participation in these programs during and after treatment. When
clients complete the Bassett graduation ceremony they will have
received a wide range of substance abuse education, relapse prevention
training, and therapeutic intervention designed to assist them in
making a commitment to an alcohol and drug-free responsible lifestyle.
Aftercare is the bridge to continued sobriety. Bassett
House takes this responsibility of networking and referral very
seriously. Each aftercare plan is designed with input from the client,
parent and referral agent. This insures that the plan is realistic and
workable. The twelve step fellowships (AA and NA),
as well as community based programs and services, are major components
of these plans. Bassett House also offers a relapse program (14-21 day
stay) to help clients who are having difficulties transitioning back to
the community.
The Bassett House on-campus school program is designed
to meet the educational needs of clients during their stay. Support and
guidance is provided by the Alexander School District and Athens
Educational Service Center. Youth receive credit for successful
participation in the school program. The classroom is modern, with
learning modules, individualized instruction and personal attention
given to each student. Our certified educational staff make this a
positive, highly innovative and unique educational experience.
Many Bassett House clients are also offenders and have
serious legal consequences that must be addressed. We fully support the
Balanced and Restorative Justice (BARJ) approach to
working with these clients and support their efforts to complete
restitution and community service. We also emphasize the need for these
clients to: (1) be accountable for their behavior and for the
consequences of their actions; (2) identify their irresponsible
thinking and behavior and (3) make a commitment to a lifestyle that is
crime free as well as drug free.
Admissions: Clients are accepted without regard to
race, religion or national origin. Admissions can be arranged by family
members or through referral by calling TOLL FREE in Ohio l-800-645-8287
or 1-740-594-8108 intake ext 20 or 19. Prospective clients, boys
and girls ages 13 to 18, should be experiencing severe alcohol and drug
problems due to their use and be willing to evaluate the seriousness of
the abuse. All inquires are confidential. Intake staff will facilitate
the process for parents and/or referring agents in a sensitive and
confidential manner. Ongoing communication with the parents and
referring agents is an important priority of the Bassett House
treatment staff. After admission, referral sources and parents will
hear from counselors on a regular basis, supported by weekly progress
reports and case reviews. The treatment protocol culminates with
re-entry meetings, aftercare plans and discharge summary.
